Fish weight calculator

Measure length and girth, then get a quick weight estimate in pounds and kilograms. Built for catch logs, release notes, and field decisions when you do not have a scale.

Formula: length² × girth ÷ 800, using inches. Range shows ±15% because body shape, spawn stage, and recent feeding can change real weight.

Measure girthAround the thickest part of the body, usually just ahead of the dorsal fin.

HOW THE ESTIMATE WORKS

A clear formula, not a fake scale.

This calculator uses the common field formula weight = length² × girth ÷ 800, with length and girth in inches. It is useful when you want to log a catch, compare fish, or make a quick release decision without hanging the fish on a scale.

The result includes a practical ±15% range because two fish with the same length can weigh differently. A thick pre-spawn bass, a lean trout, and a recently fed saltwater fish will not carry weight the same way. Treat the number as an estimate and keep fish handling time short.

Tackle is built for the next step: log the catch, save the spot, note the conditions, and learn which times, tides, and patterns keep producing fish.

Fish weight calculator FAQ

How do you estimate fish weight from length and girth?

A common field estimate is weight in pounds = length × length × girth ÷ 800, with length and girth measured in inches. It works best as a quick planning or catch-log estimate, not as an official weight.

Is this fish weight calculator accurate enough for records?

No. Body shape, spawn stage, and recent feeding can move the real weight above or below the estimate. Use a certified scale for records, tournaments, or any official claim.

Where should I measure fish girth?

Measure around the thickest part of the fish, usually just ahead of the dorsal fin. Keep the tape snug but do not compress the fish.
